Antacids are used to treat indigestion.  Excess hydrochloric acid needs to be neutralised.  While, in theory, any base or alkali will do, drinking strong alkalis like sodium hydroxide is not recommended.

Antacid tablets are usually insoluble bases which you swallow with water.

magnesium hydroxide + hydrochloric acid  magnesium chloride + water

Mg(OH)2 (s) + 2HCl (aq) ® MgCl2 (aq) + 2H2O (l)

Your task will be to find which is the best antacid.  You need to:

  • Plan the investigation. What does best mean?

  • Make it a fair test.

  • Generate some data.

  • Analyse these data.

  • Ensure that your experiment is safe.
